This probably isn’t such a good idea, but MTV is pushing through with it anyway. The music network just confirmed that Britney Spears will open this year’s Video Music Awards.

To be held this Sunday in Las Vegas, the VMAs will feature Britney singing “Gimme More”, the first single off her first album in four years. Reportedly assisting her in her performance is Criss Angel, the illusionist she is rumored to be dating.

To justify the decision to have Britney open the show, the VMAs’ executive producer, Jesse Ignjatovic, said:

“I guess, looking back, we’ve had a great history with her,” he said. “Some of the biggest TV performances [of her career] have been at the VMAs. And fortunately, [when we approached her about performing], she was into it and excited to do it. I wanted her to come on and make a statement right from the very beginning of the show. And she’ll kill it. I wanted to start the show in a very big and dramatic way, and she’s the one to do that. She’ll captivate everyone, and set the tone for the rest of the night. There’s no one better.”

Honestly, I don’t really give much of a damn if she hosts the whole show or whatever. We’ve all seen her perform in the past, so there’s nothing new here. Watching a much pudgier Britney trying to move like the old Britney would be quite a sight though. But you know what would make the show a really great one? Have Angel do everyone a favor and make her disappear forever. Now that would be something to look forward to.
